>Longest piece of music goes live

Posted by xenolovegood on September 13, 2009

>

The world’s longest piece of music is being performed live for the first time on a unique 20-metre-wide instrument at a concert at The Roundhouse in London.

The Longplayer is a 1,000-year-long composition by Jem Finer and is played out by computer at several public listening posts around the world.

It began playing on 31 December 1999 and will continue – without repetition – until the last moment of 2999.

The live performance will play a 1,000 minute section of the music.

The performance began on Saturday morning and continue until the early hours of Sunday morning.

It was in 2002 that Finer – who was also one of the founding members of pop group The Pogues – developed a score for the music.

It allows the piece to be played as an orchestral installation comprising of six concentric rings of Tibetan singing bowls.

It is this arrangement that is being performed at the Roundhouse concert.

The Longplayer is continually played out at its flagship location, the Lighthouse in Trinity Buoy Wharf in London, but listening posts are also stationed in Australia, Egypt and the US.

>Self Hypnosis for Deep Sleep

Posted by xenolovegood on September 13, 2009

>Tonight, as I type this, I’m trying a CD called “deep sleep with medical self hypnosis” by Dr. Steven Gurgevich.

Notes:

– There is a session that will teach you how to sleep anywhere. Another helps you have lucid dreams. One for creative sleep, one for healing sleep, and one for deep sleep session.

– Is it normal to fall asleep while doing hypnosis? Yes, and that is the point of the sessions on the two CDs.

– You can program yourself to wake up at a time you like in the morning.

– Never use these tapes while driving.

Hypnotic induction:  Ah I have to close my eyes for this… can’t type.

>Alien Abduction story

Posted by xenolovegood on September 13, 2009

>I heard a really strange story last night. In broad daylight about 30 years ago, in Woodland, California, a woman and her 10 year old daughter were abducted from a supermarket parking lot by a UFO that swooped straight down then stopped above them. The next thing they knew they were home and had several hours missing time. They both remember seeing the ship above them.

Has anyone ever heard of something like this?

Someone different told me a story of seeing a giant rat, about three feet high in Woodland several years ago. I had a discussion about people’s brains not being able to handle seeing aliens, so they turn it into something more familiar, like a giant rat.

Anyone from the Sacramento or Woodland areas have any more to add?

As far as UFOs that swoop low in broad daylight, I did find something about this happening in California with dumbbell shaped UFOs.

“Another curious aspect of the flying dumbbells is that they seem quite unconcerned with stealth. They swoop down low in broad daylight and display bright lights when flying at night.”

… Equally leisurely was the “orange thing shaped like a fat dumbbell” spotted by a trio of witnesses in Oceanside, California, one March afternoon in 2006. Moving at around 20 mph, it wobbled overhead “with a strange oscillating motion,” and shone a pulsing strobe light down at the ground as it sailed out of sight.

Another slow-moving dumbbell was seen in Modesto, California by R. David Anderson in May 2004. He reported that it “changed directions twice, turning on a dime” – presumably ruling out the possibility that it might have been a balloon.

A pair of witnesses in Palo Alto had an unusually close glimpse of a flying barbell while relaxing on a flat rooftop one October afternoon in 1994. It consisted of a 4-foot-wide central ‘rod’ with a pair of “perfect silver balls, approximately 8 inches in diameter” at the extremities.

The object hovered only feet away from the startled witnesses, then turned with “absolute control and precision” and sped away into the distance. – wunderkabinett

Here is are other Woodland, CA UFO sightings from the National UFO Reporting Center.

>’Butterfly Nebula’ catches Hubble’s attention

Posted by xenolovegood on September 13, 2009

These two images of the Carina Nebula show the same object as seen in visible and in infrared light. The Butterfly Nebula is about 3,800 light-years away in the constellation Scorpius.

Forget Hollywood special effects or Impressionist paintings — some of the most stunning images are created by the mysterious and often violent forces in the universe. Witness the handful of new snapshots taken by the Hubble Space Telescope which was equipped with a new imaging camera during a space shuttle servicing mission in May. It s back in business and there s lots to ooh and aah over. “Let there be no doubt this is truly Hubble s new beginning ” said Ed Weiler NASA s associate administrator during a news conference Wednesday. Take the image on the left of planetary nebula NGC 6302 also known as the Bug Nebula or the Butterfly Nebula. Its “wings” are made of gas heated to more than 36 000 degrees Fahrenheit and there is a dying star at its center. “The gas is tearing across space at more than 600 000 miles an hour — fast enough to travel from Earth to the moon in 24 minutes ” NASA s Web site says. The “butterfly” is more than 2 light-years across. NASA took advantage of the special filters on Hubble s camera to isolate the light of different elements said Bob O Connell chair of the science oversight committee for Wide Field Camera 3. The red in the image is nitrogen gas for example and the blue is oxygen. See some of the previous amazing images taken by Hubble Colors are also prominent in the image of globular star cluster Omega Centauri which contains almost 10 million stars but the color contrast here is real. The gold dots are stars like our sun but the blue ones are extremely hot while the red ones are cool O Connell said.
